Berthoud was incorporated in 1888 and named for Edward L. Berthoud, a railroad surveyor. It is mostly in Larimer County, with a small piece in Weld, and it sits a little over 5,000 feet. The old town center has kept its small-town feel since US 287 was rerouted around it in 2007, while newer neighborhoods like Heron Lakes, Prairie Star, Heritage Ridge, and Vantage have grown up around it.
